The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has asked President Bola Tinubu to provide a full account of the funds saved from fuel subsidy removal and foreign loans taken during his tenure.
In a public message released on Saturday via his official X handle, Obi maintained that the public deserves to see measurable improvements in everyday living standards. According to a report by Punch, the former Anambra State governor questioned how the administration utilized over $100bn in borrowed funds, alongside trillions of naira generated through subsidy cuts and higher tax earnings.
Obi urged the president to present verifiable data regarding key sectors of the economy. He specifically requested figures showing how many citizens have been lifted out of poverty, the number of out-of-school children returned to classrooms, and how many primary healthcare facilities have been set up nationwide.
Addressing the national power situation, Obi referenced Tinubu's earlier campaign pledge regarding electricity reform. He noted that the public needs an explanation on whether supply has improved, reminding the president of his past comment that citizens should judge him on fixing power.
The opposition politician also addressed national safety, stating that the federal government must explain its actions on security while the country continues to deal with major terrorism threats. He encouraged the president to tour the remaining 33 states of the federation to hear directly from citizens about their conditions.
Obi's remarks followed comments made by Tinubu during a political rally in Akwa Ibom State on Friday. At the gathering, the president had criticized Obi’s past record in Anambra State, claiming he avoided handling local erosion problems while in office.
