The vice-presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, Rotimi Amaechi, has announced that he will step down from office if Nigerians do not witness noticeable progress within the first year of his party’s administration.
Speaking during an appearance on NewsCentral TV, Amaechi discussed the economic vision of the ADC ahead of the 2027 general election, according to Punch. The former Rivers State governor stated that presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar understands his principles, adding that he would readily step aside if he fails to perform in government.
Amaechi explained that he does not expect every national issue to vanish within twelve months, but maintained that citizens should feel tangible improvements. He expressed confidence in an Atiku-led presidency, predicting that the public would praise Atiku's leadership and appreciate his track record early into the administration.
Outlining the party's economic agenda, Amaechi revealed plans to roll out a production subsidy for the energy sector. Under the proposal, the federal government would supply crude oil to domestic refineries below the global market rate, on the condition that operators pass down the savings directly to consumers at the fuel pump.
On food security, the former governor stated that the ADC intends to overhaul agricultural policies to halt food importation entirely. He noted that directing investments into local farming would create jobs, generate domestic wealth, and reduce security challenges across the nation.
The remarks come amid legal turmoil inside the ADC. Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja recently voided the caretaker committee led by former Senate President David Mark following a suit by Nafiu Bala Gombe, thereby nullifying the nominations of Atiku and other party candidates.
Amaechi dismissed suggestions that the ruling would halt their political momentum. He confirmed that the party has submitted an appeal and sought a stay of execution to prevent electoral authorities from acting on the judgment while campaigns continue.
