United States President Donald Trump has announced that a sweeping diplomatic agreement involving Russia, Ukraine, and the rest of Europe may be finalized soon. His statement came shortly after First Lady Melania Trump hosted representatives from both warring nations at the White House, according to Punch.
Speaking to journalists in the Oval Office, Trump disclosed that he held an unscheduled meeting with Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev. Trump described the expected outcome as a very big agreement that would go beyond Ukraine, though he confirmed he did not meet the Ukrainian delegation that visited the presidential residence on the same day.
The White House gathering aimed to strengthen momentum following a six-day localized ceasefire in Oleshky, a Ukrainian city that had suffered severe hunger. Melania Trump urged the parties to build on that brief pause in fighting to secure a lasting settlement, confirming she sent letters directly to Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
During the visit, a Ukrainian official delivered a national honour to the First Lady in recognition of her intervention in the Oleshky truce. Dmitriev also expressed gratitude to her on behalf of Putin for her humanitarian involvement. Russian human rights ombudsman Yana Lantratova and Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Lubinets were present at the meeting.
These diplomatic moves come ahead of scheduled three-way negotiations between Ukraine, Russia, and the United States in Abu Dhabi, marking their first joint round since February. In Kyiv, Zelensky reported holding an extensive conversation lasting an hour and a half with American envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
Kushner noted that discussions with NATO, European, and Ukrainian officials in Brussels focused on European security arrangements and security guarantees for Ukraine. Meanwhile, reports suggest Washington is also reviewing potential business agreements with Moscow within the framework of a broader deal.
