The Federal Government has set a target to reach 25 million citizens across the country with free and expanded eye care services by the year 2030.
This major public health objective was disclosed in a report by The Sun Nigeria on Friday. The initiative aims to scale up vision interventions and ensure that more people have access to necessary medical screenings, treatments, and optical support.
Eye health remains a critical concern across Nigeria, where access to affordable specialized care can be limited for many low-income households. Conditions such as cataracts, uncorrected refractive errors, and glaucoma affect millions of people, frequently leading to preventable blindness when left unattended.
Under the planned initiative, public health programs are expected to broaden their reach into communities that typically lack basic eye clinics. Providing free services is intended to remove the financial hurdles that stop many citizens from seeking early medical attention.
The 2030 target aligns with wider national commitments to boost primary healthcare and address preventable health conditions throughout the federation. Further details regarding rollout timelines, participating centers, and regional implementation strategies are expected as the program develops.
