Apple Studios VFX Artists Reach First IATSE Union Contract
Apple Studios’ visual effects workers have reached a major milestone in Hollywood’s evolving labor landscape, securing their first collective bargaining agreement with IATSE after organizing for union representation.
The new deal gives the in-house VFX team formal protections covering minimum wages, healthcare, retirement benefits, overtime, working hours, workplace safety and artificial intelligence. The agreement, announced September 30, 2026, adds Apple Studios to a growing list of entertainment employers where visual effects workers have negotiated union contracts.
The development is particularly notable as visual effects have become increasingly central to modern film and television production while AI and other emerging technologies continue to reshape the work. Under the agreement, Apple Studios VFX workers will now have enforceable standards governing their employment and compensation.
Under the agreement, covered Apple Studios VFX workers will receive minimum rates for every eligible job classification, with annual minimum increases tied to those negotiated under the broader IATSE-AMPTP Basic Agreement.
Workers also secured minimum-hour guarantees, payment for all hours worked and overtime protections covering holidays as well as sixth and seventh workdays.
The contract provides employer-paid Motion Picture Industry healthcare, pension benefits and a defined-contribution retirement savings plan. Employer contributions toward health and retirement benefits apply to hours worked since January 1, 2026.
Artificial intelligence is another important part of the agreement.
The contract incorporates AI protections contained in the IATSE-AMPTP Basic Agreement while also establishing daily and weekly turnaround and rest protections, meal penalties when required lunch breaks are violated and additional compensation for hazardous conditions on set.
The agreement follows Apple Studios VFX workers’ unanimous vote to unionize with IATSE in a National Labor Relations Board election in 2024. At the time, IATSE described the vote as another step in efforts to bring VFX professionals under the same types of union protections available to other entertainment workers.
The first contract now establishes formal terms covering the workers’ wages, benefits and working conditions.
Apple Studios’ agreement comes as IATSE continues organizing visual effects workers across the entertainment industry.
The union has previously announced first-contract gains involving VFX workers connected to Disney, Marvel and the Avatar franchise. IATSE says the Apple Studios deal reflects continued organizing among VFX professionals seeking standards around compensation, benefits, safety and workplace conditions.
IATSE International President Matthew D. Loeb said the Apple Studios workers had secured enforceable standards, benefits, rest protections and safeguards as new technology changes the industry.
For Apple Studios’ visual effects team, the agreement marks the transition from organizing for union representation to having a formal collective bargaining contract in place.
The deal also comes at a time when the role of VFX workers is changing rapidly, making questions around compensation, working conditions and the use of emerging technology increasingly significant across film and television production.
