The maiden edition of the Anambra Governor’s Cup Lawn Tennis Tournament has officially kicked off in Awka, with 16 sports clubs from across the state competing for top honours. Anambra State Deputy Governor, Onyekachukwu Ibezim, declared the competition open during an official ceremony at the tennis courts of Anambra Country Club, according to Punch.
The tournament is organised by the Anambra Country Club in partnership with Audi Company Limited. Organisers designed the contest to support grassroots sports development, uncover fresh athletic talent, and encourage more young people across the state to embrace lawn tennis.
Speaking at the launch, Ibezim praised the organisers and sponsors for putting the competition together, noting that the initiative mirrors the state government's push for public-private partnerships. He explained that the event aligns with Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s agenda of using sports to encourage healthy living, physical fitness, and economic growth across communities.
The President of Anambra Country Club, Ejiamatu Enekwechi, confirmed that 16 teams are taking part in the matches. He stated that the tournament is part of ongoing efforts by the club to nurture budding talent and keep youths actively engaged in sports that offer global career opportunities.
Financial rewards are on the line for the competitors. Clems Ifezue, Managing Director of Audi Company Limited, said the company stepped in as sponsor to give back to the public. He announced that the champions will receive a ₦1 million cash prize, while the runners-up will take home ₦500,000. Every other participating team will also receive ₦100,000.
Anambra State Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Patrick Aghamba, welcomed the initiative as a major boost for sports infrastructure and talent grooming. He pointed out that the government cannot build a thriving sports sector alone, urging more corporate brands and community bodies to invest in local tournaments.
The flag-off ceremony also drew sports journalists, including members of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, Anambra State Council, led by Chairman Patrick Anaso. Matches are set to continue as the 16 clubs battle for the trophy and the top cash reward.
