Veteran Nollywood actress Moji Afolayan has spoken candidly about her strong aversion to polygamy, explaining that her upbringing made her resolve never to enter such a marital setup.
Speaking in an interview with African A-List, the screen star revealed that having grown up in a polygamous household, she experienced firsthand the difficulties that come with it. She noted that what she went through was something she would never wish on another person, according to Kemi Filani.
Afolayan stated that while she had no intention of joining a multi-wife home, life took an unexpected turn when she settled down with a widower. She explained that she agreed to marry him only because his first wife had already passed away, even though he already had children and was previously married.
She also called out social media critics who frequently judge married women without having any understanding of their private struggles. She reiterated that she made it clear from the beginning that she would never agree to wed any man who had plans to marry another wife in the future.
Reflecting on relationships and mutual respect, the Yoruba film star noted that neither she nor her partner had significant wealth when they started out together. She cautioned that treating a woman unfairly always brings repercussions, adding that whatever energy a man puts into his wife, whether good or hostile, will be returned in greater measure.
Afolayan comes from a famous Nigerian entertainment dynasty as the daughter of the late legendary filmmaker and actor Adeyemi Afolayan, popularly known as Ade Love. Her siblings, including Kunle Afolayan, Gabriel Afolayan, and Aremu Afolayan, are also well-established figures across the Nigerian film and music industry.
