The African Democratic Congress is preparing to challenge the dominance of the All Progressives Congress in Lagos State ahead of the 2027 general elections, according to party leadership. The state chairman of the party, George Ashiru, stated that residents are seeking an alternative government due to growing frustration with existing economic policies.
Speaking in an interview with Punch, Ashiru said that public mood across the state reflects dissatisfaction with heavy indirect taxes and inadequate social amenities. He stated that the ruling party structure has remained largely unchanged for decades, arguing that its recent policies have harmed rather than improved the economic well-being of the residents.
Ashiru stated that the party has spent recent months restructuring internally following its primary elections. He explained that thousands of new members joined the organisation since July of the previous year, giving the opposition platform a broader base across the state. The party is now preparing to launch a 75-day grassroots campaign sprint once its presidential candidate officially flags off election activities.
Reflecting on past voting patterns, Ashiru recalled how public dissatisfaction with national security and the economy influenced the 2023 presidential election outcome in Lagos. He claimed that the economic pressures facing residents have only intensified, pointing to multiple taxation as a major burden on working people.
The party chairman noted that the ADC platform features recognizable figures, including gubernatorial candidate Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour and presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar. Ashiru expressed confidence that with a free and fair contest where every vote counts, the party's grassroots efforts will translate into electoral success across the state in 2027.
