Democrats have taken full control of both chambers of the United States Congress following the November 3 midterm elections. The outcome delivers a heavy political defeat to Donald Trump and his Republican Party, according to Vanguard.

Ahead of the polls, Trump had repeatedly asked American voters to treat the legislative races as a referendum on his presidency. However, after the results showed significant losses for his party, he took to his Truth Social platform to downplay his connection to the outcome. Trump claimed that he was not on the ballot, adding that if he had been, his party would have secured a landslide win.

The United States holds congressional midterm polls every two years, halfway through a president's four-year term. While the sitting president remains in power, all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and around one-third of the 100 Senate seats are decided. This arrangement gives the public a direct opportunity to endorse or check the administration's legislative power.

Voter anger over national economic issues played a central role in the outcome. Public frustration focused on inflation, high fuel prices, and general economic strain, alongside worries over his policies, including the war with Iran. These issues eroded support for candidates aligned with the administration across several key races.

The scale of the Democratic sweep was visible in traditional Republican strongholds. In Texas, Democrat James Talarico defeated Trump-backed Ken Paxton to claim a Senate seat, becoming the first Democrat to win a Texas Senate race since 1988. At the same time, Democrat Gina Hinojosa unseated Republican incumbent Greg Abbott to take the Texas governorship.

The elections also recorded historic milestones in representation across other states, including Georgia, where Keisha Lance Bottoms achieved a historic victory as the first Black woman elected in her contest.
