The Ghana Police Service has arrested three Nigerian nationals suspected of operating a syndicate that targets and robs bank customers in Kumasi and neighbouring areas. The arrests were confirmed by the Ashanti Regional Police Command in an official release signed by its Public Affairs Unit head, Superintendent Godwin Ahianyo, according to Punch.
The suspects were named as Aboy Promise, 30, Favour Uwalaka, 45, and Kingsley, also known as KC, aged 35. A special intelligence-led operation launched late at night on 31 October 2026 by an Inspector-General of Police team, comprising officers from the CID Headquarters Anti-Armed Robbery Unit and the Accra Regional Police Intelligence Directorate, brought down the group.
Operatives first raided a hotel in Moshie Zongo, where they picked up Promise and Uwalaka. A search of their rooms uncovered GH¢1,600, several mobile phones, a Royal motorbike, and a master key used to unlock cars belonging to bank clients.
Under questioning, the two admitted their roles in the syndicate and pointed investigators to their associates, identified as Kingsley and another man named Chinedu, popularly called Alhaji. The trail led officers to a second hotel in the Dechemso area of Kumasi, where Kingsley was captured, while Chinedu managed to evade arrest and remains on the run.
Police investigations revealed that the gang operated by keeping watch around banking premises. They identified patrons who withdrew large amounts of cash, trailed them away from the branches, and launched attacks. When victims left their money inside parked vehicles, the suspects used their master key to break in and take the cash.
The suspects confessed to robbing an individual of GH¢15,000 in Asokore Mampong on 27 October 2026 shortly after the victim withdrew funds from Kwamang Rural Bank. They also admitted to carrying out similar attacks at the Atonsu branch of Fidelity Bank, the Ahodwo branch of Access Bank, and other locations around the city.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command has urged the public to provide credible tips that could help track down the fleeing suspect, Chinedu. The command also advised bank clients to remain watchful, pay attention to suspicious movements, and avoid leaving substantial sums in parked cars.
