Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has openly criticised President Bola Tinubu, arguing that the current administration's policies have worsened the economic difficulties facing Nigerians, according to LEADERSHIP Newspapers.
The comments highlight growing friction between opposition political leaders and the federal government over the direction of national economic management. Makinde pointed directly to the choices made by the presidency as a driving factor behind deepening financial strain across the country.
Since taking office in May 2023, President Tinubu introduced several major economic changes, including the end of fuel subsidy payments and the unification of foreign exchange windows. While the presidency has consistently defended these measures as necessary steps toward long-term stability, they have triggered a sharp rise in inflation, higher transport fares, and an increased cost of living for everyday citizens.
Makinde, who is serving his second term as governor of Oyo State under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has maintained a prominent voice within opposition politics. His public critique adds to the wider chorus of state leaders, labour unions, and civil society groups urging the federal leadership to reconsider its approach and roll out stronger relief measures for struggling households.
The national government has repeatedly appealed for patience, insisting that current fiscal and monetary reforms will eventually reposition Nigeria for sustainable growth. However, Makinde’s assessment underscores the mounting political pressure facing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) administration as citizens continue to grapple with economic pressure.
