Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, have advanced to the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco following a 2-1 victory over Mexico on Thursday.
First-half goalscorer Oluebube Umejiaku put Nigeria ahead in the 40th minute before Mary Dunstan doubled the advantage in the 71st minute, according to Soccernet.ng. Although Mexico’s Emily Delgado pulled a goal back in stoppage time, the Nigerian side held on to secure their spot in the final eight.
The team will face Venezuela on Sunday, November 1, at the Mohammed VI Football Academy in Salé. Venezuela enter the fixture following an upset victory over reigning European champions Germany.
The Flamingos began their campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Poland, but quickly found their rhythm in the group stage. They defeated Puerto Rico 2-0 before delivering a 3-1 victory against defending champions North Korea. That win ended North Korea’s run of 18 matches without a loss in regulation time at the tournament, which had spanned 2,900 days.
Captain Harmony Chidi has led a squad that features several standout contributors. Alongside Umejiaku and Dunstan, attackers Oluwakemi Adegbuyi and Kanyinsola Rodiat Yusuf have delivered key goals, while Azeezat Oduntan, Ohunene Sunday, and Esther Stephen have anchored the defence.
Beyond their current campaign, the team’s strong performances have offered encouragement for the future of Nigerian women’s football. The Super Falcons are undergoing a major transition following the international retirement of veteran defender Osinachi Ohale in September 2026, as well as the departures of Onome Ebi and Ifeoma Onumonu in 2025.
Senior team leaders like current captain Rasheedat Ajibade and forward Uchenna Kanu previously came through the U-17 system in 2014 before moving on to the Falconets and the senior side.
Nigeria previously earned bronze at the 2022 edition of the tournament in India. A victory on Sunday against Venezuela will see the Flamingos return to the semi-final stage once again.
