The Federal Government has launched a direct cash assistance scheme designed to pay N50,000 each month to vulnerable households across the country. The move is aimed at easing the financial strain caused by high living costs and rising food prices.
Dr Bernard Doro, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, announced the rollout in an official statement released on Friday in Abuja, according to Punch. The initiative, known as the National Emergency Relief and Stabilisation Intervention, was created as a direct presidential measure to support millions of struggling families.
The minister stated that the intervention will help recipients cover everyday essential needs during severe economic pressures. He explained that authorities will monitor the scheme continuously and adjust the package whenever economic shifts demand changes, with beneficiaries being informed ahead of any updates.
To ensure safety and speed, the ministry is partnering with approved digital financial service firms to distribute the funds. Those selected will get an SMS asking for their consent before the N50,000 goes straight into their bank accounts or mobile money wallets.
Dr Doro warned the public against falling prey to scammers, stressing that nobody needs to fill out forms, pay money, or go through middlemen to benefit. He advised citizens never to reveal sensitive bank details, including their Bank Verification Numbers or transaction PINs, to strangers.
Anyone who receives suspicious calls or requests for payment has been urged to contact the scheme's dedicated support line on 0700-022-2222.
The minister added that the initiative works alongside other existing social welfare programmes established under President Bola Tinubu’s administration to build economic stability for ordinary citizens.
