Nigerian singer Paul Okoye, well known as Rudeboy, has opened up on his shift to a solo career following the breakup of the music group P-Square. He stated that the change was not difficult for him because he was already handling the heavy creative duties while the duo was still active.
Speaking in an interview with Lun Lifestyle TV, according to QED.NG, the musician explained that his routine as a solo act mirror the role he played in the group. He noted that he served as the songwriter, producer, and vocalist for the band, which made continuing on his own a smooth process.
Okoye noted that working alone has removed the friction that usually comes with running a group. He explained that although he maintains a working team, he now has total artistic independence and does not face pushback from anyone regarding his work.
“Transitioning into a solo artist was less stressful for me. Because it was the same me that was doing everything in the group, with due respect,” he said. He added that he remains the writer, producer, and singer, which leaves him with greater creative freedom.
During the conversation, the singer also shared his thoughts on how the digital space has impacted the music business. He observed that while online platforms offer notable advantages to musicians, social media has taken away the mystery and prestige artistes enjoyed in earlier years by making them too accessible to the public.
P-Square, which featured Paul and his twin brother Peter Okoye, known as Mr P, became a powerhouse in African music with famous hits like “Personally”, “Do Me”, and “Beautiful Onyinye”. The pair originally parted ways in 2017 amid management problems, later reuniting in November 2021 to perform together again.
That reunion ended in 2024 when internal issues surfaced once more, leading both brothers to return to their separate paths as solo acts.
