Peter Obi has urged foreign partners to throw their weight behind efforts to guarantee transparent, peaceful, and credible elections across Nigeria.
The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) made the call following a private engagement with the newly appointed British High Commissioner to Nigeria, alongside a diplomatic delegation, according to TVC News. The dialogue took place at the envoy's official residence in Abuja on Thursday.
Writing on his verified X account, the former governor of Anambra State revealed that the meeting centred on the general welfare of citizens, national governance, and upcoming national polls. He stressed that his engagement was not a campaign for personal or partisan favour from abroad.
Instead, Obi explained that the push was designed entirely to defend the franchise of ordinary citizens. "Our appeal to the international community is not for support for any particular candidate or political party," Obi said, noting that foreign backing should instead protect the fundamental rights of voters to pick leaders without interference.
He added that true democratic practice must mirror the desires and hopes of the population, urging external partners to champion accountability and honour the final mandate delivered at the ballot box. "Democracy must be about the people, their choices and their future," he stated.
During the visit, Obi also extended goodwill messages to the British High Commissioner and the citizens of the United Kingdom to mark the birthday of King Charles III.
