The United States has recorded a major political shift as the Democratic Party swept into power across both chambers of Congress during the November 3, 2026, midterm elections. The party regained a decisive majority in the House of Representatives and secured 54 seats in the Senate after flipping at least seven seats, according to THISDAYLIVE.
The outcome dismantled long-held Republican strongholds in several key states. James Talarico picked up a Senate seat in Texas, marking the first Democratic victory there since 1988, while Adam Hamilton ended a similar drought in Kansas that dated back to 1932. Another Senate seat fell in South Carolina, and Abdul El-Sayed made history in Michigan after emerging as the country's first Muslim US senator.
State governorship races also produced milestone results. Gina Hinojosa emerged as the first Hispanic woman governor of Texas, while Keisha Lance Bottoms became the first Black woman to be elected governor of Georgia.
Reacting to the defeat, Vice President JD Vance blamed the Republican collapse on the ongoing war in Iran. However, voter exit polls showed deep dissatisfaction with domestic issues, including high grocery prices, expensive housing, the overall cost of living, and an overconcentration of power in Washington.
The political shakeup in Washington carries major implications for Nigeria, whose bilateral relationship with the United States recently faced severe strain. In October 2025, the Trump administration labeled Nigeria a Country of Particular Concern regarding religious freedom, sparking diplomatic tension and threats of military action.
To resolve the dispute, President Bola Tinubu deployed National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu on a high-level mission to Washington. Ribadu engaged the White House Faith Office, the State Department, and Congress, presenting evidence that insecurity in Nigeria stemmed from broader issues like banditry, farmer-herder conflicts, and regional insurgency, rather than targeted religious persecution.
The successful mission eventually led both countries to set up a Joint Working Group to tackle shared security concerns and repair diplomatic relations.
