Senegal has officially commenced the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, marking the very first time an Olympic event is staged on African soil. The opening ceremony took place at the 55,000-capacity Stade Abdoulaye Wade in Diamniadio, according to BellaNaija.
The ceremony ran under the motto "Africa welcomes, Dakar celebrates", delivering a showcase of music, dance, visual arts, and storytelling. Senegalese music veteran Baaba Maal headlined the musical lineup alongside Kiné Lam and hip-hop group Daara J Family. Gambian kora player Sona Jobarteh, content creator Khaby Lame, and visual artist Boubou Niang also made notable appearances on stage.
Nigeria enjoyed a prominent highlight during the festivities as spoken word poet Ibukunoluwa Aramide Ajagbe, widely known as Ibquake, delivered a live performance. Supported by dancers under the arena lights, Ibquake shared the global stage alongside cultural performers like Massamba Gueye.
More than 2,600 athletes between the ages of 14 and 17 are taking part in the tournament, representing over 200 National Olympic Committees. African countries including Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, Algeria, and hosts Senegal are competing alongside international contingents from the United States, Great Britain, Germany, Argentina, South Korea, and Australia.
Competitions are spread across three primary locations: Dakar, Diamniadio, and the coastal hub of Saly. The program includes 25 sports and 153 medal events, spotlighting youth-oriented disciplines such as breakdancing, street skateboarding, 3×3 basketball, futsal, beach wrestling, and wushu, alongside archery and table tennis. The Games will run through to 13 November.
