Nigerian gospel minister and pastor Nathaniel Bassey has reached a landmark achievement on YouTube, surpassing one billion total views on the platform. The feat makes him the first African gospel musician to hit the milestone, according to Vanguard.
Platform data shows that his official page, Nathaniel Bassey Main, has generated over 1.014 billion views and gathered 5.24 million subscribers since it was set up in 2011. The recent jump in his viewership numbers came alongside the October 2026 edition of the Hallelujah Challenge, which drew praise and prayer participants from across the globe.
Bassey started the Hallelujah Challenge in 2017 as a midnight praise and prayer session on social media. Over the years, the online meeting has transformed into an international movement, pulling thousands of worshippers to its late-night live streams and accumulating millions of replay views.
The trumpeter and singer has built a vast catalogue of beloved worship anthems that anchor his popularity across Nigeria and internationally. Some of his best-known tracks include "Imela", "Onise Iyanu", "Olowogbogboro", and "You Are God". In August 2026, he also blessed listeners with the release of his single, "Agbanilagbatan".
While the new milestone has sparked talks among some supporters on whether the minister should monetise the huge digital following surrounding his worship sessions, Bassey has stood firm on his purpose. He has repeatedly explained that the Hallelujah Challenge remains an avenue for worship and spiritual devotion rather than a money-making venture.
