The Labour Party has called on Nigerians to rally behind its candidates in the 2027 general elections, pointing to the re-election of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva as proof that voters can use democratic ballots to secure progressive leadership.
According to a report by Punch, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Asogwa, made this known in an official statement released on Friday. Asogwa congratulated Lula on winning a historic fourth non-consecutive term, noting that the outcome reflected the trust citizens place in political movements focused on economic inclusion and social justice.
Lula achieved victory in Brazil's run-off election on October 25 after taking 51.79 per cent of the valid ballots, edging out his opponent, Flávio Bolsonaro, who garnered 48.21 per cent. Asogwa noted that both the Labour Party and Brazil’s Workers’ Party share strong roots in social democracy, making the victory a meaningful benchmark for Nigeria.
The opposition party maintained that its governance model offers a credible alternative that prioritises citizen welfare and equitable national development. Asogwa urged voters to study the Brazilian outcome and recognise the strength of collective civic action as political momentum builds towards the 2027 race.
To show what the party can deliver locally, the spokesman pointed to Abia State, where Governor Alex Otti is leading the administration. He described the work done in Abia as clear evidence that the party understands the practical needs of everyday citizens.
Asogwa emphasised that regular voters hold the ultimate power to shape their future at the polling units. He urged Nigerians to remain steadfast and elect Labour Party candidates into positions across all tiers of government, including the presidency.
