Controversy has trailed an incident involving the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, during his campaign visit to Ekiti State. Disagreements have surfaced over what actually happened on the ground between his entourage and other individuals.
Sowore stated that his convoy was subjected to an attack during the visit, according to a report by Premium Times. The politician maintained that his campaign team was targeted, sparking immediate concerns regarding his safety while on the campaign trail.
However, the Ekiti State Police Command has pushed back against claims of a deliberate assault. The police stated that the situation was actually an altercation that broke out between Sowore’s group and another party in the area, rather than a targeted strike on the politician.
Adding to the confusion, international agency Anadolu Ajansi reported earlier that armed men had abducted the opposition politician during his campaign stop. Local authorities and campaign representatives have continued to clarify the exact sequence of events following these dramatic and conflicting accounts.
Sowore, a well-known activist and the founder of the online news agency Sahara Reporters, is running for Nigeria's top office on the platform of the African Action Congress. Over the years, the media proprietor and politician has been at the forefront of several political protests, leading the 'Revolution Now' movement and engaging in public debates across the country.
Security during political tours remains a major subject of discussion in Nigerian politics, particularly when candidates travel across different states to rally supporters. As of now, officials in Ekiti have not released any further formal statements regarding potential arrests or injuries arising from the clash.
