The Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya has warned women against inserting oral allergy tablets into their vaginas in an attempt to tighten the area. The professional body raised the alarm after dangerous trends began circulating across social media platforms, according to Punch.

The society's president, Dr Wairimu Njuki, noted in a statement that the medicine is an antihistamine manufactured strictly for swallowing. It is designed to block histamine and relieve allergy issues such as sneezing, runny noses, itchy eyes, and skin irritation.

Addressing the misconception, the body explained that the medication was never approved or evaluated for genital use. The group clarified that while antihistamines can cause bodily dryness as an unwanted effect, vaginal dryness must not be confused with muscle tightening.

Dr Njuki pointed out that reduced moisture does not strengthen muscles or change the shape of the body. Instead, it leads to increased friction, serious discomfort, and a higher possibility of injuring delicate tissue. She added that inserting tablets meant for oral consumption is unsafe because their ingredients have never been tested on sensitive vaginal walls.

The organisation advised anyone who has experimented with the practice to stop immediately. Patients experiencing symptoms such as pain, bleeding, burning, unusual discharge, itching, or fever were urged to visit a hospital for proper medical attention without fear of judgment.

Social media users were also cautioned against treating online platforms as reliable sources of healthcare advice. Content creators were reminded to verify facts before spreading medical claims that could cause harm.

Furthermore, the society noted that the trend has driven up the demand and retail cost of the medicine. It called on pharmacists to uphold their professional code so that allergy sufferers are not denied access, while urging buyers to patronise only licensed pharmacies.
