Nigeria and the United States have moved to tighten their ongoing security cooperation against cross-border digital fraud, with particular attention on financially driven sextortion and romance scams. The renewed focus comes as both nations aim to disrupt organized networks that target vulnerable victims across international borders.
According to AIT LIVE, the push gained fresh momentum during an official trip to Abuja by Michael Gonzales, the United States Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs. His visit aligned with activities marking Nigeria’s Cybercrime Awareness Week.
While in Abuja, Gonzales held talks with key leaders across several local institutions. These included the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, the Nigeria Police Force, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, the Office of the National Security Adviser, and the Federal Ministry of Justice.
Gonzales pointed out that digital crimes move across jurisdictions within seconds, making urgent and coordinated action essential. He praised Nigerian authorities, especially the EFCC and the Federal Ministry of Justice, for their continuous support in tracking offenders and processing extradition requests.
Joint operations between the two countries have recorded significant results recently. In August, Nigeria extradited two suspects facing trial in separate US cases involving sextortion, one of which resulted in the suicide of an American victim.
Figures reveal that cooperation between the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Nigerian authorities since 2023 has uncovered suspects across more than 100 cases. This partnership has facilitated 41 extraditions, with five carried out in 2026, a substantial rise compared to the four total extraditions recorded between 2012 and 2021.
Authorities highlighted the devastating human cost of online abuse, noting that the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children logged over 50,000 complaints tied to financial sextortion in 2025. Through initiatives such as Operation Artemis, American and Nigerian agencies continue working to dismantle these syndicates alongside romance fraud groups that wipe out victims' lifetime savings.
