Nigeria needs to develop more deep seaports to effectively handle the rising volume of cargo entering and leaving the country, according to Leadership.
Abubakar Dantsoho stressed that the nation’s current maritime facilities require expansion to match modern shipping requirements. With cargo traffic steadily expanding, existing coastal infrastructure is under heavy pressure to keep up with daily trade demands.
Deep seaports are built to accommodate larger, modern vessels that traditional shallow-water ports cannot serve. Without adequate berths and deeper channels, shipping lines often face longer turnaround times and higher operational expenses, which directly affect consumer goods and general trade.
Dantsoho pointed out that creating additional facilities will position Nigeria as a stronger regional hub for maritime business in West Africa. Modern deepwater infrastructure helps ease congestion at older ports and supports broader commercial activities across various sectors.
