Nigeria is taking significant steps toward strengthening peacebuilding within its school system. With the backing of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, the country has moved forward with the creation of a specialized Teachers’ Guide on Education for Peace, according to UNESCO.
The initiative is designed to equip classroom educators with structured tools to promote non-violence, tolerance, and constructive conflict resolution among students. By providing teachers with actionable guidelines, the project aims to establish practical methods for delivering peace lessons in primary and secondary learning environments.
Educational stakeholders view peace-focused curriculums as essential tools for addressing societal challenges. Teaching conflict prevention and mutual understanding helps young learners navigate personal and communal differences peacefully. The planned guide will serve as a foundational manual to train educators, ensuring that lessons in harmony and civic responsibility are integrated smoothly into everyday school activities.
The partnership highlights UNESCO’s ongoing commitment to strengthening educational frameworks across member nations. As the drafting of the handbook advances, further steps are expected to involve review sessions and pilot implementations in selected institutions before a wider rollout.
