Nigerian health authorities have placed 53 primary contacts under close watch following the emergence of two new suspected cases of Ebola in the country. To support those affected, the government has announced a weekly financial stipend for individuals placed in isolation.
Under the new arrangement, quarantined contacts will receive an allowance of N100,000 every week throughout their observation period. The initiative was approved by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, according to Premium Times.
An official, Mr. Idris, explained that the public health agency was already handling the feeding and lodging expenses for everyone staying in designated quarantine facilities. He noted that the newly added cash support is meant to reduce the personal and economic hardship faced by individuals during their stay.
The number of people being monitored has now risen to 53 as disease response teams intensify contact tracing to contain any potential outbreak. Surveillance teams are monitoring these primary contacts closely for symptoms to prevent wider transmission across communities.
Nigeria's public health system remains on high alert, with monitoring teams working to verify test results for the suspected cases and manage the designated isolation centres. Health workers continue to urge vigilance and prompt reporting of unusual illnesses to maintain national biosecurity.
