The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has rejected claims that challenges in its gas transport network caused the ongoing drop in electricity generation across the country. The state oil firm maintained that its pipelines remain open and ready to feed power stations nationwide.

This clarification follows complaints from residents in major cities such as Lagos and Abuja, who have experienced poor electricity supply in recent weeks. According to Punch, the dispute arose after the Nigerian Independent System Operator attributed the drop in power generation to gas shortages and reduced water levels at hydroelectric plants.

In a press statement issued in Abuja, NNPC Chief Corporate Communications Officer Andy Odeh explained that operational records from its subsidiary, NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company Limited, show no pipeline problems. Odeh added that the company has actually recorded an estimated 10 per cent increase in gas production volumes so far in 2026.

The company stressed that the availability of transport pipelines should not be confused with other issues along the electricity value chain. NNPC noted that commercial agreements, plant maintenance schedules, the mechanical readiness of generating units, and actual gas offtake by power firms all play roles in whether gas turns into electricity.

To fix the lingering issues, the national oil firm called for a joint assessment involving gas suppliers, pipeline operators, power generation companies, and the system operator. NNPC said this coordinated review will pinpoint the exact bottlenecks hurting power generation and help find lasting solutions.
