Nollywood actress and filmmaker Toyin Abraham has drawn a line against continuous cyberbullying, issuing a cease-and-desist notice to members of the general public. Her legal team warned against the creation and circulation of false, malicious, and defamatory remarks directed at her.
According to a report by Kemi Filani, the directive specifically addresses bloggers, content creators, influencers, and regular social media users. The legal team instructed the public to immediately stop writing, sharing, reposting, or endorsing any unverified or harmful material about the movie star, stressing that non-compliance would attract civil litigation and other available legal remedies.
The warning comes shortly after the filmmaker faced fresh online backlash over a throwback post highlighting an earlier partnership with TikTok. Several internet users accused her of trying to rival fellow filmmaker Funke Akindele, who had recently revealed a collaboration with Facebook. Despite the criticism, some fans commended Abraham for refusing to back down in the face of persistent online pressure.
The actress has been the target of intense scrutiny and digital harassment over the past few years, cutting across her personal life and political leanings. Much of the hostility escalated around the 2023 general elections, during which she openly endorsed and supported President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration.
Abraham had previously shared the toll the backlash took on her career and well-being, stating in an interview that she had never encountered such vicious trolling before. She noted that critics actively petitioned commercial brands she worked with and urged streaming giant Netflix to pull down her films.
The mother of one also defended her right to make personal political choices, denying allegations that she received monetary benefits from the presidency for her endorsement. In previous confrontations with extreme harassment, law enforcement officers were involved in arresting online users who targeted her family, including an individual who wished harm upon her young son.
