Super Falcons winger Omorinsola Babajide has celebrated Nigeria's Flamingos after the national youth team secured their first-ever FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup title in Morocco.
According to Complete Sports, the Flamingos beat Japan 2-1 in the final on Saturday at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat. Awawu Bashiru opened the scoring in the 39th minute before Oluebube Umejiaku doubled the lead in the 47th minute, with Japan grabbing a late consolation goal before the final whistle.
Babajide, who plays in Europe and has featured in Women's Africa Cup of Nations tournaments for the senior national side, expressed her joy over the squad's historic achievement. She described the players as history makers and celebrated their fighting spirit on social media, writing: "HISTORY MAKERS!!! NAIJA NO DEY CARRY LASSTTTTT OOOO BIG UP THE FLAMINGOSSSSS!! WORLD CHAMPIONSSSS."
The victory makes the Flamingos the first African team to lift the trophy since FIFA launched the tournament in 2008. Nigeria is now also the first African country to win the under-17 world title in both the men's category, won multiple times by the Golden Eaglets, and the women's tournament.
The squad, led by coach Akeem Busari, mounted an impressive comeback after beginning their campaign with a 2-1 group-stage defeat to Poland. They won every remaining match, including knockout wins over defending champions North Korea and a 3-1 semi-final triumph against Brazil.
Earlier Nigerian squads had only managed bronze-medal finishes at the tournament. This breakthrough achievement has drawn widespread praise across the nation's football community, with senior players and administrators commending the team's determination and technical quality.
