The United States Consulate General in Lagos has celebrated the founder of Lagos Fashion Week, Omoyemi Akerele, for her impact on the fashion industry and her efforts to boost commercial ties between Nigeria and the United States.
The recognition took place during a luncheon arranged at the official residence of the U.S. Consul General in Lagos at the peak of Lagos Fashion Week 2026, according to BellaNaija. The reception brought together fashion designers, business founders, and entertainment executives to spotlight the growing influence of the creative economy.
Speaking during the gathering, U.S. Consul General Brandon Hudspeth commended Akerele for her consistency over the past decade and a half. He noted that her platform has helped local talent gain access to the international market.
Hudspeth said, "It’s an honor to celebrate Lagos Fashion Week 2026 with so many of Nigeria’s most talented designers and creative leaders. For 15 years, Omoyemi has built one of Africa’s premier fashion showcases, connecting Nigerian designers with American buyers and retailers and showing how trade creates opportunity for both our countries."
In her remarks, Akerele highlighted the importance of linking local creators with foreign consumers and developing commercial channels for cross-border enterprise.
The event also welcomed award-winning actress and film producer Osas Ighodaro among its distinguished guests.
Attendees at the luncheon tested a new fashion-inspired video game produced by the Lagos-based gaming studio Maliyo Games, demonstrating the rising intersection of modern fashion, digital technology, and interactive media.
