The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has formally dissociated itself from an archbishop claiming to be the organisation's General Secretary, cautioning the public against unauthorized political representation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The umbrella Christian body made its position known while warning individuals against using its platform or name to drive personal or partisan political interests, according to reports by Head Topics. The association stressed that the individual in question does not hold the office of General Secretary and is not authorized to speak on its behalf.
CAN also reaffirmed its stance of strict political neutrality. The leadership reiterated that the association remains committed to non-partisanship and does not endorse political figures or align with partisan interests ahead of upcoming national polls.
The warning comes as political activities and engagements begin to pick up across the country in anticipation of the 2027 electoral cycle. Faith-based organisations often face unauthorized statements from clerics attempting to align religious groups with political factions.
The Christian Association of Nigeria is the highest umbrella body representing Christian denominations across the country, comprising various blocs including the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, the Christian Council of Nigeria, and the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria. The leadership cautioned citizens, political actors, and members of the press to verify any statements concerning the organisation through its official and recognized channels.
