The presidential candidate of Accord, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has cautioned political parties and their followers against violence as preparations begin for the 2027 general elections. He gave the warning during a solidarity visit to the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, following a recent incident in Ekiti State.

According to Punch, Olawepo-Hashim stated that the country is already struggling with serious challenges, including banditry, terrorism, and kidnapping. He noted that Nigeria cannot afford to add politically motivated unrest to its current security burden.

The visit followed an October 30 incident at Tawakalitu Restaurant in the Dalimore area of Ado-Ekiti. Sowore stated that armed men attacked him and members of his entourage. In contrast, the Ekiti State Police Command originally described the matter as an altercation involving the activist and certain individuals, adding that officers rescued Sowore and took him to a hospital.

Sowore rejected the police account, maintaining that he and his team were deliberately targeted and assaulted. The police later disclosed that 11 suspects had been arrested in connection with the incident, with investigations ongoing to determine their roles. Meanwhile, the Ekiti State Government denied any involvement in the assault and asked the police to carry out a comprehensive inquiry.

During his visit, Olawepo-Hashim welcomed remarks from a United Nations representative who raised concerns over the event, urging other global partners to condemn attacks on political figures. He appealed to politicians across the country to show restraint and handle disputes through peaceful and lawful channels.

Olawepo-Hashim also reflected on his past ties with Sowore during the pro-democracy movement against military rule, noting that their connection dates back to around 1989 and 1990. Sowore expressed appreciation for the visit, calling the Accord candidate a senior comrade who introduced him to activism during his days at the University of Lagos. Sowore declared that the attack would not stop his political activities, adding that his team remains unintimidated.
