The Federal Government has approved a monthly transport support of N70,000 for public servants to help soften current economic pressures. The relief package will run for six months, starting from November 2026, following conciliation talks between government representatives and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Abuja.
The resolution was reached on Tuesday, October 27, at the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, according to a report by The ICIR. Beyond the transport intervention, the pact provides for the clearance of 19 months of allowance arrears owed to health workers across three months, beginning in December 2026. The authorities also agreed to disburse outstanding peculiar allowance arrears in three equal monthly instalments from November.
NLC leadership, led by Comrade Joe Ajaero, signed the agreement following concerns raised by the union's National Executive Council and Central Working Committee. Organised labour urged state and local governments to mirror the federal initiative, noting that both sides will meet after one month to review how well the measures are being carried out.
Despite the breakthrough between labour and the state, the announcement has sparked widespread discussion online. Many citizens taking to platforms like X and Facebook have questioned the timing of the payout, noting that it comes less than three months before the 2027 general elections.
A cross-section of commentators described the move as a political tactic aimed at winning votes, while others expressed doubts about the administration's capacity to deliver smoothly. Critics pointed to past delays involving the previous N35,000 wage award as a reason for scepticism, wondering whether a clear distribution framework exists.
Concerns were also raised regarding the scope of the intervention. Several social media users noted that the support caters strictly to civil servants, leaving out millions of struggling Nigerians in the informal and private sectors.
