Nigerian music star Oluwatosin Ajibade, better known as Mr Eazi, has claimed that English Premier League side Chelsea approached him for a deal before the club eventually signed former Super Eagles star John Obi Mikel.
Speaking during an on-air interview with Beat FM, the emPawa Africa founder said the London side had shown an interest in him, according to Blueprint Newspapers. However, he chose to focus on a music career instead of fighting for the spot.
Mr Eazi explained that the opportunity came down to a choice between himself and the midfield legend. He noted that he knew Mikel was better fitted for professional football, whereas he had the creative ability to build a thriving music career.
"They were gonna sign me. So it was like me and Mikel Obi," the singer recalled. He added that he believed Mikel had no talent as a musician, while he had the gift, so he let him go to Chelsea.
The singer drew a parallel between that moment and how he operates in the music business, explaining that he often steps away from the limelight to let others shine while he pursues his own financial goals. He also made a light-hearted reference to street-pop artist Seyi Vibez, joking that he sees him as a great philosopher for his message about letting fellow brothers thrive.
Mikel went on to finalize his switch to Chelsea in 2006, spending more than a decade at Stamford Bridge. The Nigerian star lifted major trophies with the London side, including two Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League.
Mr Eazi has also built an impressive career across the global entertainment landscape. The Banku Music pioneer has continued to release notable tracks, including his recent collaborative single "Comfort" with MOLIY.
