The Confederation of African Football has unveiled the list of nominees for the 2026 CAF Women’s Awards, with Nigeria securing spots in three major categories. The continental football body shared the shortlist on Tuesday, selecting ten contenders each across four key fields, according to Punch.
Nigeria received a nomination for the National Team of the Year prize alongside nine other African countries, including Cameroon, Morocco, and South Africa. However, no Nigerian senior star was included in the ten-woman shortlist for the prestigious Player of the Year award.
Three young Nigerian players still earned recognition for their individual performances. Edo Queens goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma earned a spot among the ten contenders for Goalkeeper of the Year. Her competition includes Cameroon shot-stopper Michaely Bihina, Morocco’s Khadija Er-Rmichi, and Senegal’s Adji Ndiaye.
In the Young Player of the Year division, Nigeria secured two places on the shortlist. Benfica forward Seimeyeha Janet Akekoromowei and Robo Queens striker Oluwakemi Adegbuyi were both selected after turning out for the national youth teams, the Falconets and the Flamingos. They will compete against top emerging prospects from Benin, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Malawi, Morocco, Senegal, and Tanzania.
The nomination for the Super Falcons comes after a challenging run at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, where they exited in the quarter-finals against Cameroon and missed out on ticket slots for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. At the previous awards in November 2025, the Falcons had claimed the National Team of the Year award, while national team goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie took home the Goalkeeper of the Year title for the third consecutive time.
Winners of the 2026 honours will be chosen via voting conducted by the CAF Technical Committee, selected media professionals, and national team captains and head coaches. All recipients will be announced during the gala ceremony scheduled to take place on Monday, December 7, 2026, in Lagos.
