Nigerian basketball center Stephanie Okechukwu has written her name into the history books after making her competitive debut for Texas Tech University. Standing at 7 feet 1 inch, the 21-year-old is officially the tallest athlete ever to play in an NCAA women’s basketball match, according to Punch.

Her historic milestone arrived on Thursday, November 5, 2026, during Texas Tech's opening fixture of the 2026-27 campaign. The Lady Raiders secured a dominant 64-37 win over Charlotte, with the Nigerian center making an immediate impression on the court.

Okechukwu contributed six points, 10 rebounds, and three blocks across 21 minutes of action. With that performance, she became the first seven-foot player to ever feature in the competition, surpassing earlier record holders who measured 6 feet 11 inches.

Texas Tech initially drew global interest to the player on January 2, 2026, when the institution announced her signing following two years of recruitment. However, she sat out the entire 2025-26 campaign while waiting to receive formal clearance regarding her NCAA eligibility.

According to Texas Tech's official team profile, Okechukwu was born on February 17 to Livinus and Patience Ndidi. She attended Fukuchiyama Seibi High School in Kyoto, Japan, and is fluent in English, Igbo, and Japanese. She also has six siblings: Calitus, Juliana, Perpetual, Veronica, Precious, and Clara.

At the university, the Nigerian athlete intends to major in business. Away from the sport, she lists swimming, reading, creating social media content, and deepening her spiritual relationship with God among her personal interests.

Looking to the future, Okechukwu hopes to build a professional basketball career and travel across the globe. She also intends to give back to her home country by launching a basketball training camp for young girls in her hometown.
