Real Madrid are confident of securing a deal to sign Manchester United teenage forward JJ Gabriel, according to Punch. The 16-year-old attacker is currently weighing up his options away from Old Trafford as he searches for a clearer pathway into senior professional football.
Although he remains officially registered with Manchester United, Gabriel has not returned to the club since walking out in September. The youngster was initially expected to become the youngest first-team debutant in United's history during a Carabao Cup fixture against Brighton. Instead, he chose to step away and has reportedly been training by himself in Spain.
Gabriel's situation has caught the attention of several top European sides, including Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain. However, the Spanish capital side have emerged as the frontrunners to sign him. His move to a continental European team has also become considerably easier after he obtained a European Union passport.
The forward enjoyed a sharp rise through the youth ranks at United. Last term, he was named the Premier League Under-18 Player of the Season, an award he claimed despite being only 14 during that campaign. He also caught the eye during United's pre-season tour against Atletico Madrid and netted a hat-trick on his UEFA Youth League debut.
United head coach Michael Carrick previously urged patience and care regarding the teenager's handling following the Carabao Cup loss to Brighton. Carrick noted that the club had to be mindful of player welfare and exposure for someone so young. Former interim manager Darren Fletcher also praised Gabriel's ability earlier in the year, stating that the world is his oyster.
Should Gabriel complete a move away from Manchester, United would be due compensation. However, the club would receive a smaller financial package if he signs for an outfit outside the English Premier League.
