The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, has reportedly been attacked and taken away by suspected political thugs in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State.
According to Politics Nigeria, the incident took place on Friday inside a restaurant in the state capital. The political activist had earlier raised an alarm through his verified Facebook page, stating that he and his team were under assault.
In his initial online message, Sowore stated that armed men attacked them inside an eating spot in Ado-Ekiti. A follow-up post on his official page shortly afterwards stated that the politician had been abducted by armed men and that his whereabouts could not be determined.
The full details surrounding the incident remain sketchy, as authorities are yet to issue an official statement. Attempts to reach the Ekiti State Police Command for clarification on the reported abduction proved unsuccessful.
The reported attack comes at a time of rising political tension as parties begin mobilising nationwide ahead of the 2027 general elections. Just a day before the incident, Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji had gathered party faithful at the Ekiti Parapo Pavilion in Ado-Ekiti.
During that Thursday event, Governor Oyebanji called on All Progressives Congress members to secure massive grassroots support for President Bola Tinubu's upcoming re-election campaign. Campaign vehicles were also handed over at the venue by representatives of the PBAT Door-to-Door Movement, led by Chief Government Ekpemupolo, also known as Tompolo.
