Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has pledged to focus on national unity, security, and poverty reduction if elected to office in the 2027 general election.
Obi made the remarks on Thursday during his nationwide Town Hall Series held in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, according to a report by The Whistler Newspaper. The former Anambra State governor shared the outcome of the meeting in a statement released after the session, noting that residents raised major worries regarding banditry, kidnapping, official borrowing, and deteriorating infrastructure in schools and hospitals.
During the interactive session, a participant representing people living with disabilities spoke on the lack of adequate care and support from society and authorities. Obi noted that how a country cares for its most vulnerable people shows its true character, stating that the compassion of a nation is measured by how it treats its most vulnerable citizens. He promised to collaborate with state administrations to safeguard the dignity and welfare of people with disabilities.
The candidate also promised heavy investment in the country's social sectors. He stated that his administration would aim to set up at least one operational primary healthcare facility in every political ward throughout Nigeria, while also pushing to bring down living costs and expand business prospects.
Before the town hall session started, Obi visited residents in the Nkalagu and Ezillo areas. While in Ezillo, he met with women selling farm produce at a local market before taking part in a street walk with party supporters in Abakaliki.
The visit to Ebonyi State followed a similar tour stop in Akwanga, Nasarawa State, which took place on Wednesday as part of his wider nationwide outreach.
