Human rights activist and African Action Congress presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has spoken from a hospital bed after he was reportedly assaulted by suspected political thugs in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State.

Sowore addressed the public in a video shared on social media on Friday, according to Politics Nigeria. He alleged that individuals connected to the Ekiti State Government House were responsible for the assault, claiming they received tracking and operational backing from operatives of the Department of State Services.

The activist explained that the incident took place shortly after he finished an interview session at MIDAS FM 90.5 in Ado-Ekiti. He claimed that security agents had been following his team since their arrival in Ekiti on Thursday, alleging that the operatives harassed them and warned a restaurant manager against hosting them.

Earlier on Friday, brief messages published on Sowore’s Facebook page sparked widespread worry across social media platforms. One initial post claimed thugs assaulted his team inside an eatery, while a subsequent alert stated that armed individuals had taken him to an unknown location before the hospital video clarified his whereabouts.

The reported violence occurred just a day after Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji addressed an All Progressives Congress gathering at the Ekiti Parapo Pavilion in Ado-Ekiti. During that event, Governor Oyebanji inaugurated the state chapter of the PBAT Door-to-Door Movement, which is convened by Chief Government Ekpemupolo, also known as Tompolo.

At the rally, where 25 campaign vehicles were handed over, Oyebanji tasked party members with securing 80 per cent of registered votes in the state for President Bola Tinubu ahead of the January 2027 presidential election. The governor praised the federal government for supporting Ekiti and urged supporters to reduce voter apathy across the state.

Neither the Ekiti State Government nor the DSS had issued a public response to Sowore's allegations at the time of reporting.
