Aston Villa manager Unai Emery is set to mark a significant personal milestone this weekend as he prepares to oversee his 200th match in the English Premier League. The Spaniard will reach the landmark when he leads his team out against Manchester United.
The upcoming fixture forms part of Premier League Matchweek 10, bringing a major domestic test for Emery and his squad. Aston Villa are heading to Old Trafford to face the Red Devils following an eventful stretch of competitive football.
Villa enter the contest looking to rebound after their perfect start in the UEFA Champions League was brought to an abrupt halt. A brace from Brazilian forward Raphinha alongside a record-breaking outing by Lamine Yamal handed the English side their first European defeat of the campaign.
Despite that continental setback, Emery's stature at the club remains firm. According to the BBC, discussions and questions are already surfacing around whether the former Arsenal and Sevilla tactician could sign a contract extension to prolong his stay with Aston Villa.
The Spanish coach has accumulated vast experience in English football, having previously managed Arsenal before taking over the reins at Villa Park. His upcoming double-century milestone comes in a busy round of Premier League action, which also features Arsenal hosting Hull City.
Meanwhile, elsewhere in English football circles, former Liverpool and Chelsea manager Rafael Benitez has confirmed that he could also make a return to the Premier League in the future. For now, all eyes remain on Emery as he looks to crown his 200th English top-flight match with a positive result against Manchester United.
